Historic District Walking Tour

Join the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society, Inc. on Saturday mornings as scheduled at 10am for a walking tour of the downtown historic district. The 1 ½ hour walking tour narrates Wilmington’s history from its founding in 1739 through the historic preservation movement of the 1960s. Themes include Wilmington’s military history, the African-American experience, the Cape Fear River’s impact on the city’s history, and architecture. Photographs taken by famed Wilmington historian Louis T. Moore are shown throughout the tour. The tour begins and concludes at the Latimer House.

Colonial and Revolutionary Wilmington

Wilmington was chartered by the colonial legislature in 1739 and quickly became a commercial and cultural center of colonial North Carolina. This walking tour will explore the growth of Wilmington and its role in the Revolutionary War, including topics such as the 1766 Stamp Act Protest, the 1776 Battle of Moore’s Creek, and the 1781 British occupation of Wilmington. The tour visits each of the three 18th century homes in Wilmington: the Mitchell-Anderson House, Burgwin-Wright House, and Dubois-Boatwright House. The tour begins and concludes at the Latimer House and is roughly 1 ½ hours.

A Religious History of Wilmington

The history and architecture of St. James Episcopal Church, Temple of Israel, St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, First Presbyterian Church, First Baptist Church, St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, and Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary are discussed. Themes include the Episcopalians’ role in the founding of Wilmington, the 19th century evangelicalism of Wilmington, and Wilmington’s Jewish heritage. The tour begins and concludes at the Latimer House and is roughly 1 ½ hours.

James F. Post’s Wilmington: 1849 – 1899

Post was Wilmington’s premier 19th century architect who made contributions to many of the historic district’s residential and commercial buildings. This walking tour explores the growth of Post’s career, beginning at the Latimer House and Savage House, where Post worked with masons R.B. and J.B. Wood, to the grand residential homes Post helped construct and design along Fifth Avenue, including the Jacob Wessell House and Bellamy Mansion Museum. The tour concludes at Thalian Hall and New Hanover County Courthouse, where Post served as supervising architect. James F. Post’s ledger page corresponding to each tour site is shared. The tour begins and concludes at the Latimer House and is roughly 1 ½ hours.
