LOWER CAPE FEAR HISTORICAL SOCIETY LAUNCHES THE PROJECT FOR POSTERITY TO DOCUMENT LIFE IN THE REGION DURING COVID-19
We have launched a community-wide outreach effort to document life in the region during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Through the Project for Posterity, the Society will be collecting material related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and is enlisting the help of residents and visitors to the Wilmington area to share. The Project will not be limited to the pandemic; throughout the project the Historical Society will offer themes focused on racial tension, social unrest, and even the heroes who helped prevail.
“Our mission as an historical society is to document and preserve the history of the Lower Cape Fear – even history in the making - and that is our motivation in launching this project,” explained Tom Crittenden, President & CEO of the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society. “Not only are we hoping to collect news stories and images of the area resulting from the pandemic, our goal is to also chronicle daily life as told through the stories of the residents and visitors to the Lower Cape Fear.”
The Historical Society is actively collecting photos, videos, written documents, and other materials highlighting the challenges and changes experienced throughout the area; submissions are sought in digital format. The Historical Society is encouraging folks to share personal accounts to document the impact the crisis had on their lives.
“As we moved through the past few months, questions arose regarding how people managed life during pandemics in years past,” explained Crittenden. “And while those times in history are documented, the personal accounts are absent and we want that to change so future generations will be able to benefit from our experiences and hopefully learn from it.”
The goal of the Project for Posterity is to document and preserve the collective experiences of our community during the crisis, including the health, economic, social, political, and religious impacts of COVID-19 on our area. With your help, the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society will build a collection that reflects the many ways residents of this area were impacted by, and responded to, this crisis. The materials may be used in a community exhibit to be planned later.
If you are interested in sharing digital content such as photographs, videos, and audio clips, please use our online submission form. Digital content may be shared through our online platforms and social media accounts.
