There Is Still Time to Give and Help Us Keep the Past Present in 2022
Dear Friends,
As 2021 draws to a close, we find ourselves reflecting on the work that has been done to preserve the history of the Lower Cape Fear.
If you could write a letter to your great-grandchildren, how would you begin? You might tell them about the moon landing, your first car, how you met your spouse, or where you were on 9/11 or what life in the Lower Cape Fear was like during the COVID-19 Pandemic. It might be a difficult letter to write. How do you begin to share your story, or the heritage of your family, with a new generation?
That is the dedicated task of your Lower Cape Fear Historical Society. Over a century and a half ago people just like you joined together to set a mission to guard and share the history of our communities and citizens. And someone just like you led the way for the LCFHS to begin 65 years ago, on June 28, 1956. Today it is our turn to continue the momentum of preserving and sharing the history of our community and our families.
But we can’t do it without your financial support. We are an organization and house museum – the Latimer House - that is truly community funded. We rely on your personal support to keep our $125,000 operating budget in working order so we can fulfill our mission and vision. Further, the events of the past two years have made this appeal more crucial than ever – with the cancellation of a number of high-profile events responsible for helping the LCFHS achieve its financial goals each year, we are turning to the people of this community to help us Keep the Past Present.
Every dollar makes a difference as we inspire the next generation to become stewards of our stories and proudly take the lead in preserving our local history. The Lower Cape Fear Historical Society’s Annual Appeal raises funds that support our mission through our daily operations, instead of specific restricted projects.
What does operating our museum look like?
Your generous financial gifts make it happen. Your Lower Cape Fear Historical Society is an organization that remains a vital part of the community, continually pursuing new ways to preserve and share our heritage. You can give the stories of our past a future full of possibilities. Please help us Keep the Past Present and join in giving generously. You may return your donation in the enclosed envelope or visit our website at www.lcfhs.org.
Wishing you and yours the best as we look ahead to better times.
Sincerely,

What does operating our museum look like?
- We educate over 3,000 youth each year through homeschool experiences, school tours, workshops, and camps. While the average cost of a youth educational experience at the museum costs the museum $13 a student, youth are often charged $6 to take part in a program. You can help offset the real cost for the experience with your contribution to our annual appeal.
- Our staff and volunteers work hard to keep utility costs down, but keeping lights and exhibits on is a priority for our museum. Our average monthly utility costs are $500. Your donation to our annual appeal can help to keep our museum lights on.
- As we look into digital alternatives to traditional mail services, we know there is still a great need for materials to be sent through the mail. We expect to spend over $1,500 on postage in the coming year. Contributions to our annual appeal help us pay this operating expense.
- In addition to our general operating costs, in the coming year we hope to raise $100,000 in restricted funds to attend to roof and structural repairs to the Latimer House and related structures on the property in Historic Downtown Wilmington.
